What is Vegan Fashion?

One question we get all the time is, what exactly is “vegan” fashion? What does it mean? Vegan fashion may cause slight confusion because most people weren’t aware that some clothing was made from animals in the first place. We usually hear the term “vegan” used in the diet industry, but it’s rarely discussed in the fashion and beauty industries.
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but animal cruelty is more common than you might think in the process of making clothes. We hope (fingers crossed) that this newfound information would jumpstart everyone’s journey towards a vegan wardrobe. However, we thought it might be helpful to give you a little breakdown of what vegan fashion means and how to make the switch towards conscious consumerism.

What Does Vegan Fashion Mean?

First and foremost, the term vegan means that you don’t eat or use any animal products. Now, we’re not asking you to change your entire diet here, unless of course, you want to! Switching to vegan fashion means that you refuse to purchase any clothing that was made from animal products. Spotting out clothing made from animal products can be pretty easy if it’s something as obvious as a leather jacket, but that’s not always the case. To make sure that you’re being a conscious consumer, be sure to avoid common fabrics such as: fur, silk, wool, cashmere, suede, and so many more which you can find on this list.
Animal products can be hard to spot in clothing, so always make sure to research the brand you’re purchasing from, check the label, and have an understanding of vegan vs. non-vegan fabrics before shopping.

Why Choose Vegan Fashion?

There’s a multitude of reasons why you should choose vegan fashion. Whether it’s because of the harsh environmental effects, cruel treatment of animals, or the lack of ethics in fast-fashion, vegan clothing should always be prioritized. Clothing made from animal exploitation means that your purchase supports industrial fashion brands who neglect their responsibility to care for the environment or for animals all in the name of fashion.

Environmental Effects and Sustainability

Humans are ruining our planet at an alarming rate. This shouldn't be news to any of us, but the terrible environmental effects that the fast-fashion industry has on our planet might be. Recent studies have shown that it’s up to 10 times more harmful to the environment to create a garment out of animal skin than it is to produce faux material.
Fast-fashion is one of the largest industries in the world, and at no surprise, it takes large amounts of water, energy, fossil fuels, and land to produce the clothes that we wear every day. Animals raised for the sole purpose of clothing are often kept in inhumane conditions for the majority of their life, before being skinned to make a fur coat. If that’s not horrific enough, animal skin also has to be doused in toxic chemicals to keep the animal flesh from rotting. For this reason, non-vegan fashion is neither a sustainable practice nor is it ethical in the treatment of animals.

Ethics

We choose vegan fashion because we don’t believe in the exploitation of animals or the harmful environmental effects that it takes to create animal product clothing. At Woron, we have a deep passion for the wellbeing of our planet and all living beings residing here. This is why we stand for sustainable practices and cruelty-free fabrics. We know that plant-based clothing can make women feel sexy, and we don’t have to sacrifice our planet, people, or animals just for style.
Choosing vegan fashion means that you no longer support inhumane, unjust, or toxic working conditions of the industrial fashion industry. For this reason, we’re so proud of you! Conscious consumerism is one step towards improving the lives and wellbeing of our planet. We don’t need a few people practicing perfect conscious living; we need everyone practicing it imperfectly. We ask that everyone does what they can because small actions will create profound changes.
If we haven't given enough reasons to choose vegan fashion, who would want their undergarments to be made from toxic chemicals or dyes anyways? For the most sensitive areas of our bodies, we believe that all women deserve to be embraced with clean and safe material that has no negative impact on their health.

Choose vegan, choose ethical, and choose sustainable.
