What is Woron Lace made of?

All lace fabric and lace tape used in our underwear pieces is made of a delicate fabric produced from recycled nylon/polyamide (fishnets, plastic bottles etc. Waste derived from the oceans).

It is light as air, very soft and the underwear made of these fibers give both the bust and booty a good support.

Recycled Fibres in general

With the fashion industry's increased focus on sustainability and reducing harm, traditional synthetics are being pushed aside for more environmentally friendly options. These more sustainable alternatives include natural fibers as well as recycled and biodegradable synthetics.

Thanks to recycled materials, the amount of energy, water, and dye is reduced by using a product that has already been processed. This means that savings are achieved by offsetting the production of new materials and instead re-using what already has been produced before.

So what is Recycled Nylon?

Recycled nylon is sourced from pre- and post-consumer waste, such as fishing nets, plastic bottles etc. which means that recycled nylon can be good for eg. cleansing the ocean of unwanted material and preventing adding more. Regular nylon is produced from the by-product of fossil fuel, while regenerated nylon can bypass this process when being recycled. Recycling saves energy spent on manufacturing new virgin nylon and unnecessarily adding more synthetic fibers to our earth.

Pros & Cons of using Recycled Nylon:

The main advantage of recycled nylon is that it can be recycled indefinitely, not compromising on the quality of the fibers. Apart from that, using recycled nylon fabrics can significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to virgin nylon.
It does not fix the issue of having too much synthetic fibers polluting our earth, but it gives us a method to use more efficiently what we already have created.

Neither regular nylon nor recycled nylon is biodegradable, but since the nylon is already in existence, we need to use it for something creative other than it piling up as trash. It is also preferable to use recycled/regenerated nylon fibers as it by-passes the fossil fuel process of making the polymer.

However, even if the fabric was recycled, it could potentially end up as waste or in landfills polluting the environment, just like traditional nylon. It is therefore important to find proper usage for existing nylon fibers and re-use them instead of producing more of the same virgin fiber.

Since recycled yarn is made from existing products that would otherwise pollute our oceans and landfills, we must conclude that recycling nylon is the best way to achieve circularity and minimize the environmental impact of new production for now.

It is important to reflect on when and how to use these fibers, to ensure longevity and work towards it being recycled again and again instead of it ending up as waste with no proper function other than waste.

We need to make sure that we don't make recycled synthetic fibers into the next Fad and go crazy producing more than there already is.  As humans we have produced a fiber that presently isn't biodegradable, but until we find a way to completely biodegrade this material, we need to find other beneficial and innovative ways of using the fiber. And there are many!

Where do we get our recycled nylon from?

We source the fibers that make up our lovely lace materials from Econyl.

“Nylon waste, otherwise polluting the Earth, is transformed into ECONYL® regenerated nylon. It’s exactly the same as brand new nylon and can be recycled, recreated and remolded again and again. That means you can create new products and buy new products without having to use new resources”.

The fibers are then knitted into our Woron lace fabrics at certified factories in Italy; the go-to place for high quality lace fabric.
